When the temperature drops, many people notice that the battery in electric vehicles doesn't quite last as long as it does in the summer, which is quite natural. Here we explain why the cold affects the battery and how you can easily get maximum mileage out of your Eloped during the fall and winter.
Why does range decrease in cold weather?
Lithium batteries, such as those found in our Eloped X4E moped car or the Eloped Elite X walking scooter, work best in warmer temperatures. When it gets cold, the chemical reactions slow down, meaning the battery can't deliver as much energy as usual.
The result is a shorter range, but that doesn't mean the battery is worse, just that it temporarily performs differently.
How to optimize your driving in cold weather
With a few simple routines, you can drive longer, safer and more efficiently even when the thermometer shows freezing temperatures.
- Charge immediately after driving After a ride, the battery is still warm. If you charge it immediately, it will retain more capacity than if you wait until it cools down.
- Store your electric vehicle indoors if possible. A garage or carport protects against cold and moisture, which extends both the battery's life and range.
- Avoid leaving the battery discharged An empty battery doesn't do well in freezing temperatures. Charge it to at least 30% even if you don't plan on driving for a while.
- Drive smoothly and plan your journey Rapid acceleration and high speed use more energy. Try to maintain a steady speed to save battery.
- Use heat wisely The cabin heater in the Eloped X4E makes driving comfortable but also draws more energy, you can warm up before driving to extend the range when driving.
The battery in the Eloped X4E - made for Nordic climate
The modern lithium batteries in the Eloped X4E and Eloped Elite X are optimized for Nordic conditions. They withstand cold better, charge faster and lose less capacity over time. With proper care, you can therefore enjoy longer electric driving all year round, regardless of the weather.
