Promenadscooters are a fantastic aid to increase mobility and freedom for people with reduced mobility for various reasons. In order to drive these vehicles safely and legally, it is important to understand the traffic rules that apply in Sweden 2024. Here is a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the regulations and ensure that you are using your mobility scooter correctly.
Where can you drive a walking scooter?
A walking scooter is an aid that can be used in places where cycling or walking is permitted. This means that you can drive your walking scooter on footpaths, cycle paths, roads and in shops.
Walkways and sidewalks
You have the right to use your mobility scooter on footpaths and pavements, but you must adjust your speed to the pedestrians to avoid disturbing or causing accidents.
Cycle lanes
The maximum permitted speed on cycle paths is 20 km/h, which means that all our walking scooters are allowed to be driven on cycle paths.
Roadway
You have the right to drive the walking scooter on the road at a maximum speed of 20 km/h. You must then act as a cyclist, i.e. that you drive on the right side of the road.
Business
It is permitted to drive the walking scooter inside shops and shopping centres. Remember to adapt the speed to the pedestrians, location and space to avoid accidents.
Important equipment requirements
In order for your mobility scooter to be safe and legal to use on public roads and cycle paths, it must meet certain equipment requirements:
- Working brakes
- Horn or other signaling device to warn other road users
- Lighting and reflex when driving in the dark that makes it visible to other road users. There must be a white light at the front and a red light at the back which must be lit when crowning in the dark.
Do I have to wear a helmet when riding my mobility scooter?
There is no requirement to wear a helmet when riding a mobility scooter. However, we recommend wearing a helmet, especially if you plan to ride your mobility scooter on the road or in heavy traffic.
Where can you park a walking scooter?
Promenade scooters can be parked in the same places as bicycles, this includes pavements and dedicated bicycle parking spaces.
